Advice Notes
In the towns we will walk to many of the attractions along broken
footpaths and potholed roads so suitable footwear is suggested.
The village trek in Nam Tha is along dirt footpaths, which could
be slippery when wet. They will also be steep in parts. Again suitable
footwear that grips in slippery situations is essential. The walks
are not onerous, but can be demanding (steep, rough, wet) over small
sections.
There are three river trips. The first is a gentle
rafting trip down the Nam Tha River. This joins with a longtail
boat, which takes us to the Mekong. Longtail boats are an exciting
way to travel, but can be noisy and ear plugs are recommended. Also,
the conditions may be cramped but not prohibitive. Many travellers
of all ages have travelled by longtail and survived. The third leg
is utter comfort, with chairs, a sun deck, and lovely food on board.
The overnight accommodation is on shore at a spectacular guesthouse
situated at one of the prettiest bends in the Mekong.
As a general guideline, people who are reasonably
fit and have had some outdoor experience would have no difficulty
with the program.
The idea in developing this program has been to combine
a wonderful trek through spectacular jungle scenery, exposure to
minority hill tribe people together with a variety of other desirable
attractions of Lao. We wish to provide an understanding of the recent
influences on Lao (French and US) as well as introduce our guests
to the strong tie with Buddhism. There is an enormous amount of
interesting architecture as well as a resurging craft industry.
The food is wonderful, and the accommodation we use has been selected
for its charm, location, and friendliness. We wish to provide this
information and exposure in a relaxed paced tour program that provides
an understanding of modern Lao through a personal experience
